Civil War Ink Series
I recently completed a series of ink drawings for Hillsdale College's All-American Hometown event.
They're inspired by the Civil War statue on campus, but not in the way you might expect. I wasn't interested in recreating the monument, I kept thinking about the man behind it: what he might have seen, what he might have taken the time to sketch if he had a journal or a letter home in front of him.
Each piece began with a piece of paper washed in diluted ink for a worn aged feel. Then a light sketch was laid in with a fountain-pen. The final main drawings were done with a fine brush dipped in ink.
There's more behind how these came together, especially the process of working through them, which I wrote about here.
All of the original pieces are available.
